Preparation and decorating within contractor teams on the main Old College restoration.

My role at the main Old College building was preparation and decorating within contractor teams on the wider restoration. The tall interiors, stone arches and layers of earlier work called for close attention to the surfaces and existing details.
The tall interiors, stone arches and layers of earlier work called for close attention to the surfaces and existing details.
Preparation included stripping earlier coatings with PeelAway 1 and working around existing repairs, stonework and architectural details within the contractor team’s agreed work areas.
Products used included PeelAway 1, KEIM Optil, a KEIM sealer and a KEIM filler. A Sadolin water-based stain was used for the windows, and an aluminium primer was also used on the project.
My work formed part of the ongoing renovation of the whole Old College building, alongside the wider contractor programme.
The PeelAway work involved using mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs). Scaffolding and other trades sometimes blocked access to the windows, so I organised which windows to focus on around the areas available, adjusting the order of work as access changed.
Old College is a Grade I listed building. Working around its existing architecture meant considering the earlier surfaces, repairs and the junctions with stone and decorative details. My work formed part of the wider contractor-led restoration.
The staircase had been cut out, with the steps kept as a feature. I painted the surrounding walls, following the stepped outline of the remaining stonework.
The photographs record the main building while restoration was in progress. They show the setting for my preparation and decorating work within the contractor teams; the completed interiors at The Villas have their own case study.
